It has been a few months and some time has passed since my return from Sri Lanka. I flew into the country after a female Tamil Tiger suicide bomber attempted to kill the Sinhalese military general. This sets the pace of what I’m going into: a bloody civil war between the rebels and the government, and the people caught in between.
The Tamils who moved from the south of India as migrant workers are striving for civil rights and a safe homeland, facing obstacles from the Sinhalese, who outnumber and outpower them. At a time of a devastating tsunami recovery and the restart of civil war, I was picked up and escorted as a Canadian doctor through countless checkpoints to tell the true story of the people who live through this situation day to day. I was taken to the camps, homes and schools of the Tamil people who live below human standards in constant fear.
I was guided and brought home safely with this film to show the world the truth of this reality.
